# now & soon

Frankfurt am Main is this year’s [World Design Capital 2026](https://wdc2026.org/en/events/eine-visuelle-weltsprache-oder-dialogwerkstatt), WDC. As part of this, I was invited to host a [dialogue workshop](https://wdc2026.org/en/events/tuqtuli-oder-dialogwerkstatt) at the [Museum Angewandte Kunst (Museum of Applied Arts)](https://www.museumangewandtekunst.de/) and to set up a WDC campus project in the run-up to this event. My [tuqtuli project](http://tuqtuli.com/) is definitely a perfect fit for their motto ‘design for democracy’.

On 4 May, students from the Hochschule für öffentliches Management und Sicherheit (HöMS) (Hessian University of Applied Sciences for Public Management and SecurityS), studying police and administration, learned to communicate using the tuqtuli principle.

Building on the idea of the later workshop on the »[Frankfurt Jacket](https://wdc2026.org/de/events/die-demokratische-frankfurter-jacke-oder-dialogwerkstatt)«, the »[Frankfurt Message](https://www.juligudehus.net/img/entries/tuqtuli/TUQTULI-Workshop-Frankfurter-Botschaft-WDC-Campus-MAK.mov)« workshop on 6 May focussed on a message in tuqtuli, which will be incorporated into the democratic garment. Your democratic attitude can find expression here as a greeting, a personal statement or a reminder to yourself – whether individual or universal, eye-catching or discreet.

In the evening, I gave a talk on my tuqtuli project, followed by a panel discussion about the potential and future prospects of tuqtuli. Guests included Dr Eliane Ettmüller / Frankfurt / scholar of Islamic and political studies, active in the field of educational work; Dr Tobias Gantner / Cologne / doctor, now a consultant in health literacy; and Andreas Knauf / Darmstadt / lawyer specialising in copyright and trademark law.

In the summer semester of 2026, I will be standing in for Prof. Daniel Utz with a seminar on the topic of ‘visual thinking’ in the master’s programme strategic design at the [Hochschule für Gestaltung (University of Design) in Schwäbisch Gmünd](https://signup.hfg-gmuend.de/laborwoche-25/workshops/tuqtuli), Germany. The subject of this seminar will be pictographic communication. Specifically, it will involve translating the instructions for various medicines into tuqtuli. To this end, my students may draw on the expertise of [the ibuproject](https://tuqtuli.com/the-ibuproject) member and pharmacologist [Muna Khalil](https://www.linkedin.com/in/munakhalil/) and engage in discussions with students of linguistics professor [Bettina Bock](https://idsl2.phil-fak.uni-koeln.de/institut/personen/lehrendenseiten/prof-dr-bettina-m-bock) at the University of Cologne. The resulting works will be exhibited in various locations as part of the milulayu project. At the same time, this seminar is my WDC campus project. In the summer, the students’ tuqtuli translations will be featured in the WDC Campus exhibition the [Museum Angewandte Kunst (Museum of Applied Arts)](https://www.museumangewandtekunst.de/).

Recently, in Berlin, I spoke about my tuqtuli project at [SoireeXD](https://www.soiree-xd.com/?utm_source=luma). Also in Kathrin Kunze’s MedTalk podcast I talked about the tuqtuli project. You can watch the whole conversation [here](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SZzvrH54ldk) on YouTube. On 10 June at 11 ym CET I will present the ibuproject there. At the monthly meetings of [Pharmacists for Future](https://pharmacistsforfuture.org) I presented it for the first time. You can watch the talk [here](https://youtu.be/_eUffcTAB-Q) (in German). For the audience, the talks at all of the venues were a real eye-opener!

On 27 May in Vienna, Austria, the ibuproject was part of [The Symbol Group conference](https://www.visionplus.iiid.net/symbol26conference) about »examining inclusivity, diversity and universality in visual languages«. On 28 and 29 May, I ran a full-day, open tuqtuli workshop at the [IIID Vision+ Conference](https://www.visionplus.iiid.net/programme-vp26), which was held in conjunction with this meeting.

Working with musician [Cornelia Ottinger](https://www.corneliaottinger.de), I developed a strategy for her public image. The next step will be to create a concept for her visual identity.

This year, I am once again a member of the organising team for the [Interdisciplinary Pfingsttagung (Whitsun Conference)](https://www.juligudehus.net/en/interdisziplinare-pfingsttagung), which will take place at the end of May[.](https://www.berlinerhof-rade.de/)
