## tuqtuli

Frankfurt, Germany is this year’s [World Design Capital 2026](https://wdc2026.org/en/events/eine-visuelle-weltsprache-oder-dialogwerkstatt), WDC. As part of this, I was invited to host a [dialogue workshop](https://wdc2026.org/en/events/tuqtuli-oder-dialogwerkstatt) at the [Museum Angewandte Kunst (Museum of Applied Arts)](https://www.museumangewandtekunst.de/) in May and to set up a WDC campus project in the run-up to this event. My [tuqtuli project](http://tuqtuli.com/) is definitely a perfect fit for their motto ‘design for democracy’.

On 3 July, I once again ran the »[Frankfurt Message](https://www.juligudehus.net/img/entries/tuqtuli/TUQTULI-Workshop-Frankfurter-Botschaft-WDC-Campus-MAK.mov)« workshop at the Museum Angewandte Kunst (Museum of Applied Arts), this time at the opening of the WDC Campus exhibition »[dreams, ideas & prototypes](https://wdc2026.org/en/frames/wdc-campus-exhibition)«.

From 24 to 28 August in Amsterdam, Netherlands, I will give a five-day open [tuqtuli workshop](https://tuqtuli.com/workshops) at the [»Word, Image and Social Dynamics« conference](https://iaswis2026amsterdam.framer.website) of IAWIS, International Association of Word and Image Studies.

In May in Vienna, Austria, I ran a full-day, open tuqtuli workshop at the [IIID Vision+ Conference](https://www.visionplus.iiid.net/programme-vp26). And in autumn I’ll be back to the city:

[Vienna Design Week](https://www.viennadesignweek.at/en/) is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year. As part of the celebrations, it is staging an anniversary symposium to examine the current state of discourse and the socio-cultural position of the design sector. It examines the current state of the design world through the lens of the »Five Stages of Grief«: »Denial«, »Anger« & »Bargaining«, »Depression« & »Nostalgia« and »Acceptance«. I will be hosting the »Acceptance« session with a tuqtuli workshop on 26 September.

As another part of Vienna Design Week, I will be running a one-day tuqtuli workshop at the [New Design University](https://www.ndu.ac.at/en) in St. Pölten on 25 September.

For next year, the [Liepāja Central Scientific library](http://www.liepajasczb.lv) has invited tuqtuli with a workshop from 5 to 9 May. As 9 May is [Europe Day](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Europe_Day), the workshop’s theme will be Europe’s motto »[united in diversity](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Motto_of_the_European_Union)«. This fits the city wonderfully, as a third of its residents – much like in the rest of Latvia – speak Russian or are of Russian origin. Additionally, there are widespread differences in wealth and age. As I speak neither Russian nor Latvian, we plan to bring in other team members who can interpret and are more familiar with the issues affecting local people.

Also in Kathrin Kunze’s MedTalk podcast I talked about the tuqtuli project. You can watch the whole conversation [here](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SZzvrH54ldk) on YouTube. In June we discussed

## the ibuproject

Watch the whole conversation [here](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I2pRBt7Xsdw) on YouTube. [The ibuproject](https://tuqtuli.com/the-ibuproject) is tuqtuli’s first international, interdisciplinary cooperation. It seeks to develop tuqtuli instructions for a simple painkiller, Ibuprofen.

At the monthly meetings of [Pharmacists for Future](https://pharmacistsforfuture.org) I presented it for the first time. You can watch the talk [here](https://youtu.be/_eUffcTAB-Q) (in German). In May in Vienna, Austria, the ibuproject was part of [The Symbol Group conference](https://www.visionplus.iiid.net/symbol26conference) about »examining inclusivity, diversity and universality in visual languages«.

## the milulayu project

is a sibling of the ibuproject, that aims to translate the instructions for nine further medicines into tuqtuli.

In the summer semester, I was standing in for Prof. Daniel Utz with a seminar on the topic of ‘visual thinking’ in the master’s programme strategic design at the [Hochschule für Gestaltung (University of Design) in Schwäbisch Gmünd](https://signup.hfg-gmuend.de/laborwoche-25/workshops/tuqtuli), Germany. The subject of this seminar was pictographic communication. Specifically, [the milulayu project](https://tuqtuli.com/the-milulayu-project). To this end, my students could draw on the expertise of the ibuproject member and pharmacologist [Muna Khalil](https://www.linkedin.com/in/munakhalil/) and engage in discussions with students of linguistics professor [Bettina Bock](https://idsl2.phil-fak.uni-koeln.de/institut/personen/lehrendenseiten/prof-dr-bettina-m-bock) at the University of Cologne, Germany. The resulting works will be exhibited in various locations as part of the milulayu project. At the same time, this seminar is my WDC campus project. In July, the students’ tuqtuli translations will be featured in the WDC Campus exhibition the [Museum Angewandte Kunst (Museum of Applied Arts)](https://www.museumangewandtekunst.de/).

In the winter semester, I will continue working on the milulayu project with students in the International Master in Integrated Design (MAID), a branch of the Department of Design in the [Bauhaus](https://www.hs-anhalt.de/en/start-page.html) [University](https://www.hs-anhalt.de/en/start-page.html) in Dessau, Germany.

## old masters, new masters

On 5 June 2027 – [Environment Day](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_Environment_Day), I will be giving the next »[old masters, new masters](https://www.juligudehus.net/en/rest-art-workshop)« upcycling workshop as part of the IGA (International Garden Exhibition) 2027 at the Zukunftsgarten (Future Garden) in Dortmund, Germany, from 12 noon to 6 pm. Come along!
