Roland Barthes 1970 called Japan the ‘empire of signs’ in his famous book of the same title. As artist in residence in Kyoto I started an expedition through Osaka’s and Kyoto’s everyday life and soon discovered the Japanese flag each and everywhere: as a read cheek in the white face of a Manga character, as a read fire alarm light on an off-white wall, as a red plastic lid on a scruffy soy sauce bottle …

Another of my work as artist in residence in Kyoto is this [graphic one](https://www.juligudehus.net/en/jermanese-fusions).
